LISTEN: Savory Road Radio Feature

Our next Savory Road Radio Feature highlights Edinburgh’s new culinary scene. We took Context Travel – “Eating Edinburgh Food Tour.” Our knowledgable guide, Hilary Stuzaker is a contributor to BBC Radio Scotland’s Kitchen Cafe. She is also a restaurant reviewer for Olive magazine and writes for Honest Cooking.com. She wanted to deconstruct the old stereotypes of Scottish food and show us the new culinary world with many ethnic foods leading the way.

Savory Road Radio Feature is broadcast on 91.9 KVCR FM on Thursday at 6:45AM and 8:45AM during NPR Morning Edition and again on Saturday at 5:35AM and 7:35AM during NPR Weekend Edition.  It also streams live on www.kvcr.org

Our tour started at Valvona ad Crolla, a legendary market  that has been serving Italian wine, meats, cheeses, and other Italian specialties since the 1930’s. For a much needed morning pick-me-up we stopped at Artisan Coffee for an Americano.  We admired the delicious looking bakery items at Soderbery Bakery Shop.  Their cardamon rolls brought me back to a long ago visit to Finland.

The smell of cheese greeted us as we walked into I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger shop,  The counters were piled high with cheeses made in Scotland and around the world.  They were gracious to prepare a platter of cheeses to try, If we had our own cooler, we would have come home with one of each.

The highlight was the public market in Stockbridge.  Vendors sold traditional Scotch Eggs to huge pans with bubbling hot Spanish paella.  We enjoyed Chinese dumplings, and  Victoria sponge cake a favorite of Great Britain. Next stop on the tour was Coco Chocolates. With flavors like Haggis Spice and Gin and Tonic, this little craft chocolatier was the perfect sweet treat.

To finish off the tour, we took a taxi to the Royal Mile and stopped in Cranachan and Crowdie.  A shop for all things Scottish, we were treated to a taste around Scotland, inculding: venison sausage, cheese, oat cakes.  We also learned that 80% of Gin was made in Scotland.

We would like to thank Hilary and Context Travel for a fun, informative, filling and delicious tour.  Hilary’s Social Media ID @mymonkfish
